What it means
Census is the number most treatment businesses run on. Staffing, payroll, food and the marketing budget are planned against it, so a few empty beds for a few weeks show up in every part of the business. Leaders usually watch average daily census over a month rather than a single day.
Occupancy is census divided by capacity. Residential and detox programs count beds; outpatient programs count active clients or group seats.
Census pressure is also where bad marketing decisions start. Buying calls and paying for referrals usually begin as a fix for a low census, and paying for referrals can be a crime under EKRA and state patient brokering laws.
Why it matters for your website
A website will not fill beds on its own, but it is the one channel a center fully owns. Track inquiries, verification requests and admissions by source and by page, so you can see which pages actually move census rather than which ones attract traffic.
Be honest about availability. Telling a family a bed is open today when it is not wastes their worst night and costs the trust the admissions page exists to build.
