What it means

Accreditation is separate from a state license. A license is the state's permission to operate; accreditation is a review against a standards body's published benchmarks, earned through a peer-review survey of a program's policies, records and practice.

CARF International, based in Tucson, Arizona, keeps a public Find a Provider search of the organizations and programs it accredits, filterable by location and by program type. That makes an accreditation claim something a family or a referral source can check in a minute.

CARF and the Joint Commission are the two accreditors treatment centers name most often. LegitScript certification is a different thing again: it vets an advertiser's legitimacy, not the quality of care.

In practice

Why it matters for your website

Name the accreditor in words, not only as a badge image, so search engines and AI engines can read it, and make sure the program names and locations on your site match the ones in CARF's directory. In our 5 October 2026 read of 37 treatment provider homepages, 19 mentioned the Joint Commission and 6 mentioned CARF. Naming it is half the job; matching the directory is the other half.

Only claim the programs and sites the accreditation covers. A seal on the page for a program that was never surveyed is exactly the kind of mismatch a careful family, or a LegitScript reviewer, will notice.
