SEO or Google Ads: which should a treatment center fund for admissions?
One is slow and free per visit. The other is fast, paid per click and gated behind certification. The answer depends on which of those you can afford this quarter.

Google Ads is the faster lever and the gated one: in the US you need LegitScript certification and Google's own (opens in a new tab) before a single addiction treatment ad runs, and you pay for each click (opens in a new tab). SEO is slower, but Google never accepts money (opens in a new tab) to include or rank sites in its organic results, so a visit costs nothing once you rank. If you are certified and the census has to fill this month, run ads to a page that converts and build SEO underneath them. If you are not certified, SEO is the one of the two open to you.
At a glance
| Factor | SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Nothing to Google per visit; the cost is the work | For each click, up to the maximum you bid |
| Before you start | A site Google can crawl and index | LegitScript certification as an addiction services provider, plus certification with Google |
| Fixed costs before traffic | None charged by Google | LegitScript fees per facility: $1,395 to $1,595 to apply, then $2,550 to $3,095 a year |
| Speed | Usually months for the searches that bring admissions | As soon as you are certified and the ads are approved |
| When spending stops | Pages keep ranking until something better replaces them | The traffic stops with the budget |
| Buying position | Not possible: no one can buy better placement in organic results | Ads are labeled and kept apart from organic results |
| AI answers | Indexed pages that can show a snippet can be cited, with no extra requirements | Advertising has no effect on your presence in Google's search results |
| Compliance risk | What your pages claim must be accurate | Keywords carry legal risk: a 2025 FTC settlement bars one provider from using rivals' names in search ads |
| Both depend on | A landing page that converts | A landing page that converts |

Which to choose
Choose SEO first if
- You are not LegitScript certified, or certification is still pending.
- You can wait months, and want each admission to cost less over time.
- Families in your area search for programs you offer, and the current results answer them poorly.
- You want to be named in AI answers, which draw on the same indexed pages.
Choose Google Ads first if
- You are certified and need inquiries this month.
- You can measure admissions by source, not just clicks.
- You can keep funding it, since the traffic stops when spending does.
- Your landing page already converts: ads multiply whatever the page does.
What decides it
Certification decides whether ads are an option at all
Google restricts the promotion (opens in a new tab) of recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services. In the US you must be certified as an addiction services provider by LegitScript and certified with Google, and Google notes that not every addiction service is eligible. LegitScript charges per facility (opens in a new tab), every year. If you cannot be certified, the comparison ends here and the answer is SEO.
Ads rent attention; SEO builds something you keep
With cost-per-click bidding (opens in a new tab) you pay for each click on your ads, so the day the budget stops, so does the traffic. Organic results work the other way. Google says it never accepts money (opens in a new tab) to include or rank sites, that advertising with Google has no effect on your organic presence, and that no one can buy better placement (opens in a new tab) in organic results. The same indexed pages are what Google draws on for AI Overviews and AI Mode (opens in a new tab), with no extra requirements.
Paid search carries its own legal exposure
In June 2025 a treatment provider settled FTC claims (opens in a new tab) that it used other clinics' names as ad keywords and paired them with its own call center number. The settlement order carries a $7 million civil penalty, partially suspended to $1.9 million because the defendants could not pay, and bars them from using rivals' names in search-engine ads. Whoever runs your ads, the keyword list is your responsibility.
Where Google Ads genuinely wins
Speed. Census is a this-month problem and SEO is a next-year answer. A certified center with open beds and a landing page that converts should not wait for rankings, and our own SEO page says the same thing: if the census has to fill now, paid search is the faster lever. Ads also let you test a message in days, which SEO never will.
Where KhanWork fits
We build the pages both channels land on. Ongoing SEO runs inside Growth Partner ($2,500 a month): pages built one request at a time, a blog post a week and a monthly AI visibility report, all read against a baseline recorded before launch. Foundation Partner ($1,000 a month) builds the landing page your ads point at, checked against what LegitScript reviews and live in 14 business days from the day content and assets land.
We are not a media buyer. If you need someone to place and manage a large monthly ad budget, hire a specialist for that, and we build the pages their traffic lands on. Cornerstone Healing Center saw 20 percent more website conversions after our redesign, and a page that converts better makes every click it receives worth more.

No. Google states that advertising with Google has no effect on a site's presence in its search results, and that it never accepts money to include or rank sites in organic results.
