What it means

IOP is Level 2.1 in the ASAM Criteria. It is a common step down from residential care or PHP, and a starting point for people who do not need round-the-clock care. Many programs offer day and evening tracks so people can keep working or studying.

Medicare began paying for intensive outpatient services in 2024 under its calendar year 2024 outpatient payment rule, in hospital outpatient departments, community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics and, for opioid use disorder, opioid treatment programs. A physician has to determine that the patient needs at least nine hours of services a week.

Why it matters for your website

IOP families are fitting treatment around work and school, so the schedule is the content. Publish the days and clock times for each track, the typical length in weeks, how soon someone can start and how family sessions work.

If you run an evening track, name it in the page title and on the first screen. For a working adult it is often the deciding detail.
